September Prompt

A schoolroom scene in book or film

Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink

Chapter VI. A Schoolroom Battle

Instantly the schoolroom was in an uproar. Obediah lurched forward and caught hold of Caddie's curls, and Tom and Warren, sensing danger to Caddie, began leaping over benches and desks to get to her tormentor. But, if the Woodlawns were clannish, so were the Joneses. Ashur threw himself in Tom's way, and the two went down together, rolling and kicking, under the desks and benches. Clattering slates and the shrieks of frightened little girls mingled with the shouts of boys.

Miss Parker, who had been calmly ringing the last bell, rushed in to behold her schoolroom in complete disorder.

"Boys! Girls! she cried. "Stop! Stop at once!"

The noise began to die away. The shrieking girls and shouting boys slipped into their seats. Tom and Ashur ceased pommeling each other and crawled out from under the desks, looking a little ashamed of themselves. But in the middle of the room Caddie and Obediah still struggled and fought, Obediah pulling her curls this way and that and Caddie getting a kick on his shins whenever she could. They looked with awed faces from Miss Parker to the struggling pair. What would Miss Parker do? Her mouth had set in a hard, thin line.

  1. Good one! I actually still have never read Caddie Woodlawn (is that crazy?). It's funny to me as I feel like it's always mentioned in a similar famous category as Anne of Green Gables and Laura Ingalls books.

    1. Really?? The book is excellent! And it's not very long either, you could finish it in two days. Caddie Woodlawn tends to be categorized with Anne of Green Gables because Caddie herself has red hair, a terrible temper and a penchant for trouble. And with Laura Ingalls, because she's a tomboy and is very close to her father. All three of them are excellent ordinary heroines who I've admired since childhood.

  2. I've seen you taking about this book several times and now I want to read it! Great choice for a scene.

I love getting comments, long or short, whether you agree with me or not. .

Just be kind. I don't tolerate any rudeness at all. So just be careful with what you write and how you write it.
