House of David: Season 2

Shepherd, Warrior, King. Those are the three attributes or stages that House of David focuses on when telling the story of the rise of King David to the throne of Israel. If season 1 was about a shepherd boy who must follow the will of God, then season 2 is about a warrior who must fight for God's people. Even if it's against their own king. Picking up literally where season 1 left off, the story is plunged into epic battle sequences with little time in between to breathe. And that's just the first 10 minutes of episode one. 

After the defeat of the Philistine army, David is honored by Saul. He is given a commission over 1,000 men and is promised to marry one of his daughters, which causes trouble of its own. Ever since he was anointed, David and his family have had to keep his divine claim to the throne a secret. However, word has gotten around that Samuel may have found a new king and the hunt is one to find this would be king. David is in danger within Saul's household.  Besides Jesse's house, only Jonathan comes to know this secret. And it is Jonthan who takes it upon himself to train David to become a powerful soldier and warrior that Israel will need for a king. 

For over a year, David goes to battle against intense forces and grows stronger every day. However, he still makes time to remember his shepherd's heart and write his poetry. David's popularity begins to concern Saul and his court, and they fear that David will eventually eclipse the king himself. Yet, when Saul pushes David too far, he defies everyone's expectations, conquers and destroys his tens of thousands, literally putting the fear of God into Saul and all who doubted him.

David's victory allows him to marry Mychal, but deception continues to flow freely throughout the palace. Eventually, David's great and dangerous secret places him between the king he has sworn to serve and the God his heart follows. 

The second season of a series can make or break the series itself, but season two of House of David added more depth and strength to the story. In season 1 Jonathan hardly acknowledged David, but by the end of season 2, he is willing to give up everything for this once gawky, awkward shepherd boy because he fully trusts in God's plan. Really, Jonathan was hands down one if not the best part of season 2 (and him and his wife Sara! Loved them!) 

The character/name dropping for future storylines was great. Primarily, Uriah the Hittite (wonderful man), the evil witch of Endor (horrible) and Bathsheba is mentioned. However, my one complaint as ridiculous as it might be...

Please stop interrupting these people (Jonathan and his bride Sara and then David and Mychal) on their wedding nights! Like come on! We've spent two seasons building up these relationships and you can't give these people the happiness they've worked hard for? I'm not talking a full-on sex scene, but you can have a romantic wedding night sequence and still keep it watcher friendly! 

Ok, rant over : ) Anyways, I loved season 2. It was bold, daring and exciting, with the ending leaving you on edge for the eventual war between Saul and David and rightful claim to the throne of Israel.
