November Prompt
A scene with family breaking bread together in book or film
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
I know the prompt said 'family,' but that could include every episode of Downton Abbey (and believe me there are some great family dinner moments!) However, I chose Guernsey because it's how an impromptu dinner party of friends helped them become a family while withstanding German occupation. It's extraordinary how a small act of kindness would change so many lives.
During WWII, the British Chanel island of Guernsey is taken over by the Nazis. The island residents are terrified and have little to no contact to the outside world. Now cut off and alone, the islanders withstand the German's as much as they can, but they are hungry and cold and what they do have must be given to the Nazis. Then, really out of nowhere, a pig is found. By law the pig needed to be turned in, but some quick thinking and the aid of a pig farmer, becomes the inspiration for an unexpected dinner of several neighbors.
That first meal eventually becomes the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. The only way these neighbors are going to survive the war is if they remain close together. After that first meal, many of them realized how the war and the fear of the Nazis was cutting them off from basic human contact and they needed one another for survival. No one may have guessed how that one small dinner party would become the story of inspiration and hope.

Just be kind. I don't tolerate any rudeness at all. So just be careful with what you write and how you write it.
